Many of the early day taverns were due to the liberality of the Holland Land Company, which sold the prospective. There was no place more necessary to early American life than the tavern. The range and quality of pubs varies wildly throughout the UK as does the range of beers, wines, spirits and foods available. Having eaten and imbibed in several period taverns I finally felt ready to read up on the role of taverns and drinking in this period of American history.
